Lines of Business

Commercial Lines

Commercial lines are insurance products sold to businesses — general liability, property, workers' compensation, commercial auto, and professional liability — characterized by larger premiums, longer sales cycles, and underwriter-driven placement.

Also called: Commercial Insurance, Business Insurance

Commercial lines are insurance products sold to businesses. The common components of a commercial account include general liability, commercial property, workers' compensation, commercial auto, business owners' policies (BOP), and professional or cyber liability.

How commercial differs operationally

  • Larger premiums, fewer accounts — one account can equal a hundred personal lines policies in revenue
  • Underwriter-driven placement — appetite, loss history, and narrative matter as much as the numbers, so pure rating software cannot do the job
  • Multiple stakeholders — owner, CFO, risk manager, and often a broker of record on the other side
  • Long renewal cycles — meaningful commercial renewals begin 90 to 120 days out, not 30
  • Continuous service load — certificates, endorsements, audits, and claims run all year

Why the renewal cycle is the whole game

A commercial renewal is not a single conversation. It is a sequence: exposure updates collected, loss runs ordered, submissions prepared, markets approached, options assembled, and a decision meeting held — across months, with dependencies on third parties who are slow.

Most commercial renewals that go badly go badly because the sequence started too late, not because the price was wrong.

Where automation helps, and where it does not

Automation earns its keep on the cycle scaffolding: triggering the renewal workflow at the right day count, chasing loss runs and exposure questionnaires, extracting data from dec pages and applications, and keeping every stakeholder's next action visible.

It does not replace the market conversation, the coverage judgment, or the relationship. In commercial lines the realistic claim is compressing a 120-day scramble into a controlled process — not removing the humans from it.
